Kingsley Sears, Choir Director

Kingsley Sears, Choir Director

Kingsley lived and attended school in Berea, Ohio through grade seven. The family then moved to Wadsworth, Ohio as his father started teaching vocal music there. Kingsley sang in his dad’s choirs for five years. Following high school graduation, Kingsley earned a degree in Public School Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. His first teaching job was in Bangor, Michigan, vocal music and social studies. Then he taught junior high vocal and instrumental music and arithmetic in Kalamazoo and directed church choirs in the area. In 1954 he and Lurline Willis were married. Their three children were born while they lived in the Kalamazoo area. In 1957 he completed his Masters Degree in Administration at Western Michigan University. In 1959 he became Assistant Director of Personnel in the Kalamazoo Schools.

In 1963 the family moved to Warren when he was hired as Personnel Director for the Warren Consolidated Schools. All three of their children graduated from Warren High School. In 1982 he founded the Warren Community Chorus which he still directs. The next year he started directing the Choir at Celtic Cross Presbyterian Church. He retired from the Warren Consolidated Schools in 1985.

Kingsley played in the band in high school, in college, and in several community bands including the Warren Concert Band (since 1974) and the Michigan State University Alumni Travel Band. Instruments have included baritone, trombone, flute, and tuba. He wrote program notes for the Warren Symphony Orchestra and has given tuba lessons to middle school students.

Non-musical hobbies include camping, bridge, and care of their home. Up until June, 2012, Kingsley was running in about two dozen races per year including the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day run. Years ago he completed 5 Detroit Marathons; later, the distances were limited to 3 or 4 miles, but since hip surgery on late 2012, running is history.
